What are natural dyes?
Natural dyes are dyes or colorants
derived mainly from plants and insects.
Common dyestuff
The majority of our natural dyes are vegetable dyes from plant sources
–roots, bark, leaves, wood, rinds, fruit,
flowers, seeds etc and insects.
The dye material is put in a pot of water and then the
silks or cotton to be dyed are added to the pot, which is heated and stirred
until the color is transferred.
Time varies. It can take from one hour to several days
depending on a particular colour. Dyeing in natural color ikat is time
consuming.
2. WEAVING PROCESS
Finally, after silkworms were raised, silks extracted, spun, reeled and dyed, it is time for weaving. Although weaving is not the most time-consuming, some pieces of silk fabrics and cotton cloth may take weavers several days to finish.
